I filled this box with water and measured a total of 575mL. I even stacked the top tier to make sure I hadn't overfilled the bottom and put the lid on the top for the same reason. I love that it is so helpful with portion assessment. I grew up with no concept of proper eating proportions so discovering bento has been such a blessing. My daughter, 15, loves it and says it's just the right amount to leave her full and satisfied at lunch.

I've packed a few lunches in it by now and am still thrilled. I have been able to fit quite a lot into it. It's simple to remove the small section insert that goes into the top tier if you wish to pack the box differently on some days. I have discovered that I prefer to use a wide orange non-latex "rubberband" instead of the blue elastic. The band doesn't slide, adds a fun splash of color, and doesn't worry me about my latex allergy since most elastics are natural rubber-based. The majority of you won't need to worry about allergy but you might like to try a rubberband if you worry that the elastic could slide off the box or want the contrast it can provide.

I bought 2 of this type (the giraffe one also) and am surprised how much they hold - two lettuce wraps plus veggies and hummus. Which is plenty for a small(ish) woman like me and even my husband said it was enough food. However, there are two reasons why I rated it a 3 and not a 5. The "sealable" (no pun intended) lid does leak a bit if you turn it upside down, though that's not a problem for me as I 1). carry it upright in a square lunch box and 2). don't put stuff that liquidy in it. You can get around this leakage (it's only bad if it's REALLY liquidy like vinaigrette or something) by putting sauces in their own mini bottles which you can buy.

The second star loss is that even though it says it's dishwasher safe, the top w/ the design on it is not. I put it on the top rack and washed it like normal and the design melted so that now one of my fish is a blob. So don't put the design bit in the diswhasher (I'd say this w/ the microwave too). But otherwise, I think this is adorable!

This is an adorable and perfectly proportioned Bento box. The size is ideal for a small lunch bag or if holding non-perishable food, it's an excellent fit for a backpack. My only complaint is the top sealed layer; the lid doesn't seal properly. Other than that, this is a super Bento box. I love it!
