This adorable bento set is as practical as it is pretty. The total volume is approximately 440ml, (240 for the bottom half and 200 for the top half). The bowl just sits on the rim of the domed-lid for the top half and while you can hide a few small crackers or grapes underneath, it's not secure without using a bento-elastic. For reference 240ml = 1 American Cup.

The 440ml capacity is really too small as a single comprehensive meal bento for anyone other than a very small child and so is really designed for use as an afternoon snack, side dish bento or as a pre-dinner appetizer/ tide-over bento.

Due to its cuteness that I have found excuses to use this as much as I can. I bring these (I have the Samurai version as well) on picnics and serve hummus and dips from the top lidded section, carrots and cheese from the lower section and use the hat part as a serving bowl for pita bread that I pack separately in a ziplock bag. It is also the perfect size for yogurt and granola with a few raspberries hidden underneath the hat. For winery picnics, I pack marinated olives and artichokes in the lidded section, cheese in the other and a small cracker or two underneath the hat (secured by the elastic).

Due to its size, highly recommended for compact high-energy snack foods. Not recommended for sandwiches, salads and other bulky foods.

Microwave safe without cover. Hand wash only.

I've read the reviews about this product being too small and was really apprehensive about buying it because I needed a lunchbox for school next year. After debating about it for a week, I decided to bite the bullet and buy it.

In the end, I like it a lot! It is made in japan (not in China-a 1st subtle sign that it's of good quality). When I saw that, I said "wow, that just made my purchase worth so much more!" I don't intend to offend any Chinese here (I'm chinese myself!), but China tends to produce rather low quality items. This seems very sturdy and durable, the paint looks like as if it would stay on for a long period of time. The plastic lid cover is on very securely. Overall, the design and quality of this bento is superb.

Now, the main concern, the size. When I saw it in real life, I was actually surprised at how BIG it was! No, by no means am i saying that it's a big bento. It is small. However, after reading the comments, I imagined it to be so much smaller. Therefore I was pleasantly surprised. This box is definitely enough food for lunch in accordance to the Japanese ideal of a lunch. I can easily see how this will be a filling lunch if one knows how to pack a bento efficiently. I'm excited to use this bento and I know that I will be very full with my lunch during the school year.

My 7 year old daughter LOVES this thing and says everyone at school is jealous (So THAT is great haha) HOWEVER, as the person making her lunch I can't figure out what to do with the hat part. It is like a soup bowl, but you can't put soup upside down, so I just shove a baggie of chips or carrots up there, and so far so good.
